Alger County, Michigan Overview
Alger County is located in the northern region of the upper peninsula in the state of Michigan. Consisting of approximately 5,048 square miles, approximately 4,133 square miles (or 82%) of the county is comprised of water. Adjacent to Luce county to the east, Delta County to the South, Marquette County to the west and the Thunder Bay District of Ontario Canada to the North, the area had approximately 9,522 people as of the 2013 census. Alger has only one zip code, 48610, for the less than 10,000 people who live there.

The clerk’s office keeps track of all birth and death records as well as concealed weapon permits, marriage licenses, notary public records, veteran discharge records, circuit court records, assumed business names, passports and voter registration records. She is also the Chief Election Officer within the county. Under her position as Register of Deeds she is also responsible for filing official documents related to real property.
Nearly all records that are controlled, filed and maintained within the County Clerk’s office and the office of the Register of Deeds are public record and can be requested in person during normal business hours at the office. There is currently no way of ordering these documents online from Alger County.

The Alger County Assessment Department is known as the Equalization Department and this department is responsible for developing a true cash value for all properties that are located within its jurisdiction. This includes all properties within the county.
